ARCHIVAL AWARENESS

Help us to spread knowledge about the importance of record-keeping/ documentation and archiving.

OR

Arrange archive workshop in your organisation to gain archival knowledge.

OR

CREATE ORGANISATIONAL ARCHIVE

Create an internal organisational archive within your organisation to start archiving the records of your activities from today. Records of present activities are a future archive of a society and a nation.

In addition

You can implement record-keeping and archiving in your organisation’s statute to keep your organisation’s internal record-keeping and archiving practices continue smoothly in the future, despite of administrative changes. Along with that you can create a guide with record-keeping and archiving plan, and rules of procedures.

OR

ARCHIVE COLLECTION

The process of gathering the archival materials of an organisation is a job for the current committee. But giving the appropriate cooperation in the collection process is the responsibility of all former and contemporary members who hold the archival documents. Hence, those archival materials are properties of the organisation and the historical and cultural heritage of a society.

OR

There is also a history behind an individual´s archive collection of documents regarding an organisation. The history about why and how those documents became an collection of that individual is a part of the historical context of that collection. It would be more appropriate for the present administration to carry out a plan or agreement on how to preserve that collection after him/ her rather than to dismantle it. Preserving the archive collection in the collector’s name will be helpful to preserve the origin, context and purpose of the collection.

Aim

Documentation and archiving!
‘Documentation and archiving’ is a process. The process consists of several phases, namely registration, preservation and public access. Creating a record in text-based, audio, video or other medium is a method of documentation. A ‘documentation and archiving’ process is complete when a record is created and preserved in a repository with public access for use by contemporary and future generations.

Purpose

The primary value of this process is to maintain an administration. The purpose of record-keeping is to keep control, democracy and transparency in an organisational structure as well as in a society. The secondary value of this process is preserving the documents that can reflect historical and cultural heritage of a society. These can be gained by creating reliable and authentic documents that become evidence for our rights and history.

For attention

Please do not forget that this is a social process. So it may take many years. But this social process must begin now when the first generation of migrated Tamils are still with us. Do not forget that this is essential for the existence of present and future generations.

The role of DsporA Tamil Archive

The website of DsporA Tamil Archive is an independent knowledge platform. The aim of this website is to motivate documentation culture and encourage archival awareness at social and organisational level of Tamils and other migrated societies

DsporA Tamil Archive encourages to create diverse knowledge. For instance, a child will learn that something is a yellow colour when the child is introduced with all different colours. The yellow colour will stand out and project its uniqueness, regardless of others´ varying opinions about the yellow colour. Thereby a child will be able to identify the uniqueness of each colour and its advantages and disadvantages. This can be applied to history. When we embrace the diversity of sources for opinions, point of views, policies and theories, we will be capable to handle any kind of challenge and find solutions. Selective and filtered knowledge will only weaken our intellectual capacity!

History will always guide us!
For history to guide us, it needs to be complete!
